Protect Forests Save Our Climate Now!

Dear Mr. President,

Indonesia is currently losing its forests faster than any other major forested country. According to FAO (2006), Indonesia loses at least 1.8 million hectares of forest per year, making Indonesia the third largest greenhouse gas emitter in the world, after the United States and China. The main source of Indonesia’s emissions is deforestation.

The main drivers of Indonesia’s fast rising deforestation are large-scale logging for pulp and paper and timber, peatland clearance for palm oil expansion and the forest fires that rage every year as more priceless forests are cleared. Floods, drought and changes in the climate pattern related to food security also cause forest destruction in Indonesia.

Sir, you made a commitment to reduce Indonesia’s greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation by 50% by 2009 at the G8 meeting in Hokkaido this year. I urge you to uphold your commitment and to implement an immediate moratorium on all forest conversion, including expansion of oil palm plantations, industrial logging, and other drivers of deforestation.

This moratorium will not only help curb the country’s greenhouse gas emissions, but will also safeguard the wealth of tropical biodiversity and protect the livelihood of forest dependent communities all across Indonesia.

Sir, please help to Protect the Forests to Save the Climate

Thank you for your time and consideration on this important matter.

Arthur K.P.
